【Technical Analysis】17 August 2026

■ Summary

Today’s technical picture clearly shows broad dollar weakness and strength in major currencies, precious metals, and equity indices.

EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and NZD/USD are rated “Strong Buy” across all timeframes. AUD/USD is also rated “Strong Buy” from the 15-minute chart through the daily chart, confirming aligned uptrends among non-dollar currencies.

In contrast, USD/JPY is trading at 158.98, with the 15-minute, hourly, and daily charts all rated “Strong Sell.” USD/CHF is also biased toward selling from the short term through the daily chart, confirming broad dollar weakness.

Among yen crosses, AUD/JPY and NZD/JPY are rated “Strong Buy” across all timeframes. EUR/JPY is also rated “Strong Buy” from the short term through the hourly chart. Although USD/JPY is falling, the strength of the Australian dollar, New Zealand dollar, and euro is exceeding yen-strength pressure.

Gold spot and futures are rated “Strong Buy” across all timeframes. Silver is maintaining its hourly and daily uptrend despite short-term corrections.

Among equity indices, the S&P 500, NASDAQ 100, and Nikkei Average are rated “Strong Buy” across all timeframes. This is a typical risk-on market, although the Dow Jones alone is seeing stronger short-term selling, confirming technology-stock leadership within U.S. equities.

■ Foreign Exchange Market

EUR/USD: 1.1606

All timeframes from the 5-minute chart through the daily chart are rated “Strong Buy.”

Moving averages and technical indicators are fully aligned, making this one of the strongest uptrends among the currencies analyzed. Short-term overbought conditions require attention, but the basic strategy remains buying on dips.

GBP/USD: 1.3562

All timeframes are rated “Strong Buy.”

Hourly and daily moving averages are also rated “Strong Buy,” confirming a clear medium- to long-term uptrend. As with EUR/USD, GBP/USD remains likely to attract buying during dollar-selling phases.

USD/JPY: 158.98

The 5-minute chart is neutral, while the 15-minute, hourly, and daily charts are all rated “Strong Sell.”

The pair has failed to hold above 159.00, leaving downside momentum dominant from the short term through the medium term. The basic strategy is selling rebounds.

However, as yen crosses are broadly strong, this decline appears to be driven by dollar weakness rather than broad-based yen strength.

USD/CHF: 0.8085

The 5-minute through hourly charts are rated “Strong Sell,” while the daily chart is rated “Sell.”

Selling direction is aligned across all timeframes, with dollar weakness and Swiss franc strength continuing. Selling rebounds remains favored, although caution is needed for downside risk as the pair approaches 0.8000.

AUD/USD: 0.7121

The 5-minute chart is rated “Buy,” while the 15-minute through daily charts are rated “Strong Buy.”

Direction is aligned from the short term through the medium and longer term. In addition to dollar weakness, the Australian dollar itself is showing strength, making buy-on-dips strategies effective.

NZD/USD: 0.5920

All timeframes are rated “Strong Buy.”

NZD/USD is one of the strongest uptrends alongside EUR/USD and GBP/USD. Caution is needed against chasing highs in the short term, but this is not a market to sell against the trend.

■ Yen Crosses

EUR/JPY: 184.51

The 5-minute through hourly charts are rated “Strong Buy,” while the daily chart is rated “Buy.”

Euro strength is exceeding yen strength, and the uptrend is continuing even at elevated levels. Buying after short-term pullbacks remains the favored strategy.

GBP/JPY: 215.60

The 5-minute, 15-minute, and daily charts are rated “Strong Buy,” while the hourly chart is neutral.

The broader trend remains upward, but hourly momentum has temporarily slowed. Buying after confirmation that the hourly correction has ended is preferable to chasing higher prices.

CHF/JPY: 196.64

The 5-minute through hourly charts are rated “Strong Buy,” while the daily chart is rated “Sell.”

Short-term strength conflicts with the daily downtrend. Buying is favored for short-term trading, but caution is needed for a decline from elevated levels until a daily trend reversal is confirmed.

AUD/JPY: 113.21

All timeframes are rated “Strong Buy.”

This is one of the clearest uptrends among yen crosses. Australian dollar strength is outweighing USD/JPY weakness, making buy-on-dips the basic strategy.

NZD/JPY: 94.12

All timeframes are rated “Strong Buy.”

New Zealand dollar strength is very clear, with direction fully aligned from the short term through the daily chart. However, if gains become too rapid, it is preferable to wait for a correction rather than chase higher prices.

CAD/JPY: 114.74

The 5-minute and daily charts are rated “Strong Buy,” while the hourly chart is neutral.

The medium- to long-term uptrend remains intact, but hourly momentum has slowed. Buying after confirmation of a pullback is preferable.

■ European Currency Crosses

EUR/GBP: 0.8559

The 5-minute through hourly charts are rated “Strong Buy,” while the daily chart is neutral.

In the short term, the euro is outperforming sterling. As the daily chart lacks clear direction, this is primarily a short-term euro-buying and sterling-selling opportunity.

EUR/CHF: 0.9385

The 5-minute through hourly charts are rated “Strong Sell,” while the daily chart is rated “Strong Buy.”

The short-term decline and daily uptrend are in complete conflict. The current move may be a correction within the daily uptrend, so short selling should not be extended too aggressively.

AUD/NZD: 1.2028

Buying is dominant across all timeframes.

The Australian dollar continues to outperform the New Zealand dollar. However, as both currencies are strong against the dollar and yen, AUD/NZD may see comparatively limited volatility.

■ Precious Metals

Gold Spot: 4,404.32
Gold Futures: 4,461.15

Both spot and futures are rated “Strong Buy” across all timeframes.

Moving averages and technical indicators are fully aligned, confirming a very strong uptrend. The basic strategy remains buying on dips, but lot-size management is important because sharp rallies can be followed by large corrections.

Silver Spot: 65.7520
Silver Futures: 65.895

Spot silver is bullish from the 15-minute chart through the daily chart, with the hourly and daily charts rated “Strong Buy.”

However, the 5-minute chart for silver futures is rated “Sell,” indicating short-term profit-taking. The medium- to long-term uptrend remains intact, but short-term volatility is likely to be greater than in gold.

■ Energy

WTI Crude Oil: 81.36

The 5-minute and daily charts are rated “Strong Buy,” while the hourly chart is rated “Sell.”

A short-term correction is occurring within the longer-term uptrend. Until the hourly chart turns bullish again, direction remains unstable and chasing prices higher should be avoided.

Natural Gas: 2.645

All timeframes are rated “Strong Sell.”

This is the clearest downtrend among the commodities analyzed. Selling rebounds is the basic strategy, and countertrend buying should be avoided until a clear reversal signal emerges.

■ Cryptocurrency

BTC/USD: 63,563

The 5-minute chart is rated “Strong Sell,” the 15-minute chart is rated “Buy,” the hourly chart is rated “Strong Buy,” and the daily chart is rated “Sell.”

Directions are not aligned across timeframes, with a medium-term rebound conflicting with the daily downtrend. Short-term trading remains possible, but it is difficult to conclude that a sustained rally has resumed until the daily chart turns bullish.

■ Equity Indices

S&P 500: 7,785.76

All timeframes are rated “Strong Buy.”

The uptrend is aligned from the short term through the daily chart, representing the risk-on environment in U.S. equities. Buying on dips remains favored.

NASDAQ 100: 30,046.14

All timeframes are rated “Strong Buy.”

The direction is even clearer than in the S&P 500, with gains led by technology stocks. Although caution is needed at elevated levels, there are no technical signs of a shift toward selling.

Dow Jones: 53,732.41

The 5-minute and 15-minute charts are rated “Strong Sell,” the hourly chart is rated “Sell,” and the daily chart is rated “Strong Buy.”

This is a short-term correction within the daily uptrend. The Dow is weaker in the short term than the NASDAQ and S&P 500, confirming widening divergence within U.S. equities.

DAX: 26,457.50

The 5-minute, 15-minute, and daily charts are rated “Strong Buy,” while the hourly chart is rated “Buy.”

This remains the most stable uptrend among European equity indices. Buying on dips is favored.

UK 100: 10,777.45

The short-term charts are rated “Strong Buy,” while the hourly and daily charts are neutral.

A short-term rebound is visible, but medium- to long-term direction remains unclear. It is preferable to wait for the daily chart to turn bullish rather than chase prices higher.

CAC 40: 8,637.97

The 15-minute and hourly charts are rated “Strong Sell,” while the daily chart is rated “Strong Buy.”

This is a short-term correction within the daily uptrend. The CAC 40 is weaker in the short term than the DAX, and confirmation that the pullback has ended is needed.

Nikkei Average: 69,194.00

All timeframes are rated “Strong Buy.”

The uptrend is fully aligned from the short term through the daily chart. This is a very strong trend, but volatility may expand at elevated levels, making it preferable to wait for pullbacks rather than chase higher prices.
